Confinement-induced columnar crystals of ellipses

Densest-packed structures of identical ellipses within a parallel strip have been obtained through Monte Carlo simulations and analytic derivations. Each such is an affine transformation particular densest-packed structure circular disks. Three types identified: Types X Y correspond, respectively, to stretches along the perpendicular axial directions strip, type M corresponds locally densest structures.
